I put the chain back on the door after she was gone.
Then I opened my laptop and went to Josh's page.
His last post was from that afternoon. A photo of the theater on Liberty Avenue, its old marquee lit up.
Big week coming. Big truth coming.
I closed the laptop.
I didn't sleep.
At five-thirty Jude's car was at the curb with the engine running and two coffees in the cup holders.
One of them was for me. I wasn't allowed anything before surgery, and he'd forgotten.
He saw my face when I got in.
"What happened?"
I told him about Jenna. About the post.
He listened with both hands on the wheel.
Then he signed, "That's tomorrow. Today you're having surgery."
"It's going up while I'm asleep."
"Then I'll be awake for you."
The waiting room on the fourth floor was full of people in sweatshirts holding paper cups.
