Chapter 8: The Lobby

Josh put his hand flat on the reception desk.

"Josh Rinehart, Speakeasy. I've got eleven-thirty with Jude Carrick."

The receptionist checked her screen.

"I'm sorry. That meeting was cancelled on Friday. Mr. Carrick sent you an email."

"There must be a mix-up," Josh said, still smiling.

"Jude and I talked on the phone. He loved it. We came all the way across town."

Jenna leaned on the desk next to him and looked around the office.

Her eyes went past the coffee machine. Past the big windows.

The receptionist half stood up. "Sir, you can't..."

Twenty people stopped typing.

I stood up.

"Hey, everybody," Josh said, giving a small, cheerful wave. "Sorry about this. I'm Josh. That's my ex-girlfriend."

He pointed at me.

"She hasn't taken the breakup well. She's been following us around for a month. Showing up places. Telling people she built our product."

The four people who signed by the coffee machine weren't signing anymore.

Jenna came up behind him with her arms crossed tight over her blouse.
