Chapter 16: What I Wanted

Joelle had left my mother's rose on the clubhouse floor.

She pulled my cut off her shoulders when Amos took her arm, and she dropped it at his boots without looking at it.

I carried it home across my knees in Boone's truck.

Rafe followed us up the ridge on his bike.

He set my duffel in the front hall and told us he would see us at the Wednesday run.

He didn't come in.

I stood in my own kitchen for the first time in nine days.

Her lipstick was on a coffee cup in the sink.

A suitcase sat open in the spare room, and two of her silk blouses hung in the closet.

Boone carried the suitcase to the porch and threw it down the steps, and the blouses went after it.

When he came back in, I was hanging the cut on its hook by the door.

"You didn't have to do that tonight," I said.

"I did."

He came to stand behind me, close enough that I felt his heat and not his hands.

"You said something in the shed," he said. "That I didn't know why you left."

"You said it."

"I said I knew. I said you wanted out of this life." His shoulders dropped. "Tell me what you wanted, Lena. I'm done guessing."

I turned around.

The kitchen light was behind him, and I couldn't see his eyes well, and it was easier.

"I wanted a ring," I said.

"I bought you a ring."

"You bought me a forty-dollar band at a courthouse counter, because Dutch said a patch was enough.

"I wanted a ring that meant you'd thought about it."

His jaw moved.

"I wanted my name on the wall, Boone. Not Property of anyone. The line's wall has every wife's name on it back to the beginning, and mine was the only blank space."

"That's my fault."

"I wanted you to look back. In nine years of rides, you've never once turned your head to see if I was holding on."

He took my face in both his hands.

"I looked back," he said roughly. "I looked at the first turn, and you were gone, and I turned that bike around in my head every mile for three days."
