Chapter 22: Dutch Wasn't on the Road
Boone did not sleep.
At first light he sat on the edge of the bed with Rafe's phone in his hand, which I had carried upstairs and handed to him without a word.
"I could be wrong," he said.
"You could."
"There could be some reason he'd have a text from Amos that says good work."
"Fourth Street," I said. "Tuesday. Two weeks before the ride."
He closed his eyes.
"Get dressed," he said. "I want you to hear it from him."
We rode down together on his bike, and I held on with both arms around his waist.
The clubhouse lot held a dozen bikes, and the door was propped open.
The road captain and a few of the older men were at the long table with coffee.
Rafe stood behind the bar, drying glasses with a towel.
He saw us in the doorway, and his hands slowed.
"Morning," he said.
"You left your phone on my counter," Boone said.
He set the phone on the bar.
Rafe looked at it.
"Thanks, brother. I wondered where it went."
"A.D.," Boone said.
The towel stopped.
"Who's A.D., Rafe?"
"A guy I know."
"Read it." Boone slid the phone across. "Out loud. To the line."
Rafe didn't touch it.
The captain had gone still, and so had the others, and I stood just inside the door with my pulse knocking in my throat.
"I'll read it," I said. "Fourth St., Tuesday. Good work. The rest when it's done."
Nobody breathed.
"That's the date of my first appointment," I said. "I was alone in a car in a parking lot with my hands shaking. The only person who knew I'd been was a nurse. And you."
