Chapter 6: Maple Doughnuts

Rafe rolled into the Lost Trail lot at eight with a box of doughnuts and a face full of apology.

He stopped his bike beside Boone's and looked at the carved door, and his grin dropped away.

"Jesus," he said. "Who did that?"

"Somebody who knew which room was hers," Boone said.

He had not slept either, and he had put a flannel over his T-shirt, and he stood between me and the door with his arms crossed.

I noticed the way the sleeves strained over his forearms, and I made myself look at the doughnuts instead.

Rafe crouched and ran a thumb along the cut in the paint.

"Old founder's mark," he said. "Amos's. Or somebody who wants it to look like Amos."

"What does that mean?" I asked.

"It means a man who wanted to scare you would carve it, and a man who wanted you gone wouldn't bother." He stood up and brushed off his knees. "Amos doesn't leave marks, Lena. He leaves paperwork."

His voice was easy, the same easy voice that had talked me down off the porch two days ago.

"You think it was a kid," Boone said.

"I think it was somebody who wanted you to think Amos. I'll ask around the mill towns."

He clapped Boone on the shoulder.

"You look like hell, brother. Go eat something."

Then he turned to me and held out the doughnut box.

"Peace offering. Maple. Your favorite."

It was my favorite.

I could not remember telling him that.
