Chapter 7: She Breaks the Terms

I opened my own door, and I walked down the corridor to his.

He had left it ajar.

Cade was standing by the fire in his breeches with no shirt, my green stitches dark down his forearm, and he turned around before I knocked.

"You said I'd have to open it myself," I said.

"I did."

"Your terms, husband. I'm breaking them."

He crossed the room in three strides and took my face in both hands.

He kissed me hard, and I opened my mouth under his at once.

He tasted of smoke and the spirits I had washed him with.

I got my fingers into his hair and pulled him down to me.

He lifted me against his chest, and my feet left the floor.

"Eight days I've watched you walk past my door," he said against my mouth.

"Seven."

"Eight, counting the carriage."

He carried me to the bed and set me down on the edge of it.

I had never once been wanted like this.

In my first life the prince had never touched me, and I had slept alone for eight years in the palace.

"I haven't," I said, and my voice came out thin. "Not ever."

"I know."

"You know?"

"I saw how you looked at my hand in the kitchen, when I touched your face." He knelt in front of me and put his hands on my knees. "Tell me what you want, Imogen."

"You. Take off my nightgown."

He pulled it over my head and dropped it on the floor.

He looked at me for a long moment, and his breath went out of him in one rough sound.

"Gods," he said. "Look at you."

I was bare in the firelight, and I wasn't afraid.

He bent his head and took my breast in his mouth.

His tongue circled my nipple and he sucked, and a sharp sweet pull went straight down between my legs.

I made a noise I didn't know I could make.

"That's it," Cade said, against my skin. "Let me hear it."
