Chapter 9: The Ball at the Palace

Imogen's POV

"You should have told me whose claim I was standing against," Cade said.

We were in the palace guest rooms, the night before the ball, and he was standing at the window with his back to me.

He had held it in for ten days.

He had told me what he saw in the lane, and I had been quiet for a whole day after, working out what it meant.

Now he said it to the glass.

"I stood in your father's hall and told the heir to the throne that his judgment was wrong. I did it for a wife who'd known me an hour."

"I know."

"You came to my stable and asked for a wall. You never said it was the Crown you wanted a wall against."

"If I had said it, you would have refused."

"I'd have said yes." He turned around. "That's what I'm angry about. You thought I wouldn't."

I hadn't thought it through that far.

I had been afraid, and I had picked the one man who might not break.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I didn't know how to ask."

"You could have said, 'Garrow, the prince is a danger to me.' That's all it needed."

"You'd have asked why."

"I did ask. You told me half." He rubbed his face. "I'm not angry that you used me. I'd have lent myself for less. I'm angry that you didn't think I could stand it."

He did not come to bed that night.

He slept in the chair by the door, with his sword across his knees, and in the morning neither of us spoke of it.
