Chapter 13: Same Rhythm

"Your thumb," I said.

Griffin's eyes stayed closed.

"What about it?"

"It's tapping my hip."

"It's a nervous habit."

"It's the same speed as the grey line."

The line was still hanging over the pillow, bright in its square brackets.

"[He loved that.]"

His thumb stopped.

The line flickered once and went out.

I sat up slowly, holding the sheet to my chest.

"Do it again," I said.

"Miranda."

"Press your thumb into your hand. Just once."

He opened his eyes and looked at the ceiling for a long time.

Then he pressed his thumb into his palm, hard, and a new grey line came up in the air between us.

"[Hi.]"

I stared at it.

My fingers started tapping on their own, fast and wild, on my bare thigh under the sheet.

"The bed is a pharmacy."

"The poster is my aunt."

"I have never met a rower."

"Beau's one shoe is a witness."

"Everything is fine and I live in a lighthouse."

Griffin watched every one of them go up.

He didn't laugh.

"I wrote all of them," he said. "Every grey one. Since the first week of September."

"All of them."

"All of them."

"The one where you have no idea I'm the girl you're meant for."

"That was a lie," he said. "I had every idea. I had been having the idea for a month."

I pulled my knees up under the sheet.

"Why?"

"I saw your first comment in the dining hall," he said. "Somebody's oatmeal had a whole opinion about itself, and the words were just there, over a girl in a green cardigan."

"That was me."

"I know. I laughed at the oatmeal for ten minutes. Beau thought I'd hit my head."

"And you said nothing."

"I can't talk to a girl in daylight," Griffin said. "I stood in front of you at the coffee cart once and ordered a tea I hate."

I remembered the tea. He had paid for mine by accident.
