Chapter 18: No Key

I did not answer the prosecutor.

"That's for the law to decide," I said. "Not me."

She nodded and let me go.

Dorinda drove me home in silence.

"He asked to be charged," she said at the light. "That man."

"I heard."

"Is that supposed to make you feel better?"

"No."

"Good," Dorinda said. "Because it shouldn't."

The next morning, an envelope came to the pharmacy counter by courier.

It was a notice of a special meeting of the Holloway Freight shareholders, called by Winslow Holloway.

Under it was a handwritten line.

You don't have to come. Your seat is yours either way.

I went.

I went in my beige coat with my cane, with Dorinda beside me, twelve weeks pregnant and still weak.

The meeting was not in the boardroom.

It was in the atrium on the ground floor, where the dispatchers and drivers and office staff stood in rows with their coffee.

Winslow had called every employee in the building.

He stood at the front on the low marble step in a plain gray suit, with no tie.

When I came through the doors the whole room turned.

He saw me and did not smile.

He nodded once and began.

"I'm resigning as chief executive officer," he said. "Effective now."

A murmur ran through the crowd.

An older dispatcher near the front crossed his arms.

"I'm also signing my twenty-five percent of this company into an irrevocable trust. For Rhona Holloway and for our child. I can't take it back, and I don't want to."

The murmur grew.

The company's lawyer stood at his elbow with a folder.

"You're giving it away," somebody called. "Why?"
