Chapter 4: Tuesday's Signature

On Thursday evening the doorbell rang four times in a row.

The housekeeper opened the door, and Dorinda walked in without being asked.

She was still in her white pharmacy coat.

Her red hair was coming out of its clip, and she was out of breath.

"Where is Rhona?" she said.

Dorinda had been my best friend since our first week of college.

I wanted to throw my arms around her.

My arms went through her shoulders, and she shivered and rubbed them.

Winslow stood in the hall with his sleeves rolled up.

"She isn't here," he said.

"Her phone has been off since Tuesday afternoon."

"She does that when she's angry."

"She called me at three-thirty on Tuesday from a sidewalk," Dorinda said. "She said she found something in her bank statements. She said she was going home to ask about it."

Sybil came down the hall, one hand on the rail.

"Dorinda, dear. They had a small disagreement. She's staying somewhere to cool off."

"Where?"

"She'll tell us when she's ready."

Dorinda turned to Winslow and held his eyes.

"Rhona doesn't go quiet. She sends me forty texts when she's mad at you."

Winslow said nothing for a moment.

Then he said, "I'll handle it."

That was what he said when he meant nothing would happen.

Dorinda dug into her bag and pulled out a small paper pharmacy sack.

"She left her refill at my counter last month," she said. "The heart-rhythm pills. Give them to her."

Winslow frowned. "She takes stomach pills, not heart pills."
