Chapter 13: Best Man

The comments under the doorbell photo came in faster than Taylor could read them.

"Number nine slept with the roommate?"

"Plot twist. The girl he was using is cheating on him."

"He was using her first. That doesn't count."

"Who posts his own girlfriend's walk of shame, though?"

Taylor pushed her laptop across the table.

"The thread is split," she said. "Half of them are on your side. The other half just want to watch."

"I don't need an audience," I said.

"You have one anyway."

Rhys's phone buzzed on the table between the noodles.

He turned it over, and the screen said Colin.

"Take it," I said. "Put it on speaker."

Rhys looked at me for a second, then pressed the button.

"Yeah," he said.

"Bro." Colin sounded calm, which was worse than scared. "Are you sitting down?"

"I'm eating."

"I saw the camera footage. I'm not going to say anything about what I saw."

"Okay."

"I talked to her sister. Delaney called me this afternoon, really upset. She says Hannah's been fragile since the thread blew up, and that you were just there when she broke."

Taylor covered her mouth with both hands.

"I wasn't there when she broke," Rhys said evenly. "I was home. It was my apartment."

"Doesn't matter. Here's the plan. Delaney's birthday is the sixteenth, a Sunday. Her mom booked a back room at some Italian place on Main, the whole family's coming."

I felt my fingers go cold on the edge of the table.
