Chapter 15: Over the Bike Shop

Rhys cooked for me on Sunday night, in the kitchen over the bike shop, with his back to me and his sleeves up.

Colin had gone out at six in his camel coat and said he'd be late.

I sat on the counter beside the stove with my feet swinging.

I watched Rhys dice an onion into pieces so small I could not have counted them.

"Small dice," I said.

"You remembered."

"You taught it to me with a bandage on my thumb."

He turned the heat down and wiped his hands on a towel.

"I wanted to hold your hand a lot longer than the tap needed."

"I know," I said. "I noticed."

He came and stood between my knees.

He didn't touch me at first.

His eyes went over my face, slowly, and the kitchen got very warm.

"Rule one," he said, low.

"Is canceled."

"Rule two."

"You don't leave," I said.

I took his shirt in both fists and pulled him down to me.

He kissed me hard, and I could feel that he was done waiting.

His hands went to my waist, then under my sweater, flat and hot against my back, and I gasped into his mouth.

He turned off the burner without looking.

"Bedroom," he said against my throat.

"Now."

He lifted me off the counter, and I wrapped my legs around him and laughed.

He carried me down the hall with his mouth on my neck.

We didn't turn on the light.

He set me down on the edge of the bed and knelt, and he took his time unbuttoning me, one button, one kiss.

My sweater went.

His shirt went.

I put my palms on his chest and felt his heart going hard under the burn scars, and I pushed him onto his back.
