Chapter 20: Pick a Side

Nobody in the back room moved.

On the screen, the little white triangle sat in the middle of a black rectangle, waiting.

Delaney looked at my mother, and I watched her try three faces in a row.

First she tried tears.

Then she tried confusion.

Mom kept staring, and my sister's mouth twisted, and what she tried last was the real one.

"Oh, come on, Mom," Delaney said. "You'd have believed anything I told you. You always did."

"Delaney," Dad said.

"She does what I say." Delaney flung her hand at Mom, and the red sleeve whipped. "She did it when I was six. She did it when I took Hannah's prom date, and she said Hannah would get over it. She told me about Chicago the same night Hannah told her. Because I asked."

Mom put her hand over her mouth.

"It was easy," Delaney said. "You're so easy."

It was very quiet.

My aunt had her purse in her lap, ready to leave.

My uncle was looking at the floor.

Colin, still on one knee, with the ring box in his fist, said, "And the Friday guy?"

She turned on him.

"What?"

"The pages Hannah gave me. The man who pays you four hundred dollars every Friday. You said he was like an uncle."

"He is not your business."

"I've been sneaking out of my own house for you for fourteen months," Colin said. His voice shook. "I wrote a whole post about your sister so you could look good. I told thirty thousand strangers your sister was plain."

"Nobody asked you to be pathetic," Delaney snapped. "At least he pays. At least he's a man with a car."

Colin's face crumpled, then closed.
