Chapter 6: Small Dice

Rhys's apartment was on the second floor over a bike shop, and it smelled like onions and chain oil.

"He's out," Rhys said, when he opened the door. "Colin posted that he's out tonight until late. I checked."

"Delaney's out tonight too," I said, and stepped inside.

I said it flatly, and Rhys said nothing, and I didn't weigh it.

The kitchen was the only tidy room.

A bike frame hung from hooks in the living room ceiling, and four cookbooks lay open on the counter with sticky notes sticking out of them.

I knew every one of them.

"You're cooking from the library's copies," I said.

"I'm cooking from your copies," he said. "I mean, the library's. Sit."

I sat on a stool.

He was making a braise, and he moved around the kitchen without looking at what his hands were doing.

"Talk," I said. "What did Colin say this week?"

Rhys put a lid on the pot.

"He says the thread is up to nine thousand people. He's got a fan club now. Somebody made a spreadsheet of your cardigans."

"Of my what?"

"Fourteen cardigans. They're ranking them."

"That's insane."

"Number nine is yellow. People are very upset about number nine."

I laughed, and it surprised both of us.

Then I stopped, because it wasn't funny.

"What else?"

"He's throwing a Halloween party here, on the thirty-first." Rhys wiped his hands. "He wants to announce you as his girlfriend in front of everyone. He's calling it 'going public'."
