Chapter 9: Fourteen Months

I took out my phone and hit record.

My thumb didn't shake, which surprised me.

Through the crack in the door I could see the edge of a bed, and my sister's red dress.

"Fourteen months," Colin said, and his voice was sulky. "Fourteen months of sneaking out of your house. I'm sick of it, Dee."

"Fourteen months and two more weeks," Delaney said. "Then it's over."

"And what if she doesn't cry? She kissed me on the steps like she wanted to bite me."

"She'll cry. She cries at commercials."

I had cried at a commercial once.

It was a dog food commercial, and Delaney had been sitting next to me on the couch, and she had remembered it for six years.

"When she's crying, you break up with her," Delaney said. "I'm the shoulder. She won't take the Chicago thing, because I need her. Mom needs her. She'll stay and pay the rent, and in a year we'll tell her about us and she'll be too tired to mind."

"You're terrible," Colin said, and he was laughing.

"I'm practical."

There was a rustle, and then there was nothing but the sound of kissing.

I watched my sister's hand slide into his hair.

I watched his arm go around her waist.

I did not storm in and I did not scream.

The recording light stayed on, steady and red, until I had every word.

Then I stopped it, saved it, and backed away down the hallway with my phone against my chest.

I made it as far as the bathroom, and I shut the door and sat down on the edge of the tub in the dark.
