Chapter 19: She Takes His Schedule From the File

On Monday morning, I place a one-page release in Adrian's hand before his attorney can gather the papers.

The probate clerk watches from the end of the table.

Her file is open to Friday's order, with Camille's printed text clipped behind it.

"Please sign here," I say.

Adrian looks down at the page.

His black pen stays capped beside his legal pad.

He does not reach for it.

"You want access to my counsel's production file," he says.

"I want the original governance transfer schedule identified and delivered to the court."

"You already have the schedule."

"Your copy is attached to your emergency filing. The court needs the original produced by the firm that prepared it."

His attorney leans over the table.

"This is unnecessary. The schedule was included for continuity planning."

The clerk turns one page in the emergency file.

"Your client may refuse the release," she says.

"The court can then address the missing original at the next session."

Adrian's public face returns.

Concern.

Patience.

He places one finger beneath the final paragraph.

"And this does not authorize a general search of privileged material?"

"It authorizes the clerk to obtain the original schedule and its execution record," I say.

"Nothing else."

"You understand that the schedule was prepared during a crisis."

"I understand that paper has dates."

His mouth tightens.

Adrian picks up the pen.

The cap clicks against the table when he removes it.

Black ink touches the line beneath his name.

It is the pen he used on the death identification.

The clerk sees it too.

Her eyes move from the pen to his signature, then back to the date.

Adrian signs in a smooth hand.

He adds the date and slides the page toward me.

"There," he says. "Now the record can show that I cooperated fully."

"It can show that you authorized the request."

His smile holds.

"Those are the same thing in this context."

"No," I say.

"They are not."

The clerk takes the release from my hand.

I do not give it to Adrian's attorney.

The clerk checks the signature against the sworn materials already in the file, then presses the court seal across the lower corner.
