Chapter 30: Five Minutes
Ike looked at him across Marshall Street.
Then he looked at me.
"Your call," he said.
"Take her up," I said. "I'll be five minutes."
"I'll be at the window."
"I know."
He carried Nettie in through the office door. Her sneaker swung against his hip.
There's a bench at the bus stop in front of the dry cleaner, under Darla's gold letters.
I sat down on one end of it.
Brantley sat down on the other.
I took out my phone and set a timer for five minutes and laid it on the bench between us, face up.
He looked at it.
"Darla taught me that," I said.
"Lainie..."
"Four fifty-one."
He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.
He'd always sat back. On benches, in booths, in court. He'd never leaned forward in his life.
"I watched you draw me tonight," he said. "Through the doors. On the steps."
"I know."
"Was it bad?"
"It was accurate."
He laughed once. It hurt him.
"I need you to know something," he said. "I need you to know I never meant a man. When I said do what you have to, I meant..."
"You've said that under oath. Twice. In your lobby once."
