Chapter 15: Tierney Comes Back

Victoria's POV

Samson came through the motel door twenty minutes later, with his jaw set and a brown envelope in his hand.

Tull's wife was still crying on the far bed.

Tull sat with his head down and did not look at either of us.

"He admitted it," I said. "He said Brice drove his truck."

Samson nodded once.

"Before Tull says anything else," he said, "I have to tell you something, and I have to say it before my brother does."

"Before he does what?"

"He came to my door this morning. He had me suspended by noon."

"Why?"

"Because he's afraid of you." He swallowed. "And because he said that if I didn't stay away from you, he would tell you what I did the night Tull was arrested."

My stomach tightened.

"What did you do?"

"I talked, Victoria. The night of the arrest I talked too much to the wrong man."

"To Brice."

"I gave my brother the exact page he needed to change." His voice broke. "I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know."

The room was very quiet.

Tull lifted his head and watched us both.

I looked at Samson's face, and I looked at the hand that held the envelope.

It was shaking.

"Did you do it on purpose?" I said.

"No."

"Did you know he was the driver?"

"No."

"Did you know he was my boyfriend?"

"God, no."

"Then you didn't do anything to my mother," I said. "He did it to both of us."

He stared at me.

"He thought if he said it first you'd stop looking at me," I said. "He thought you'd rather lose me than let me hear it."

"That's what I thought too."

"Then you were both wrong."

I took the envelope out of his hand, and I put my hand where it had been.
