Chapter 20: Route 9, Again
Samson's POV
The valet stand was empty, and the sports coupe that belonged to a city councilman was gone from the curb.
I stood in the exhaust with a uniformed officer beside me and heard it screaming away down the avenue.
"Which way?" the officer said.
"North," I said. "He's going to Route 9."
"You don't know that."
"I know my brother."
I got into the passenger seat of the patrol car without being asked.
The officer looked at my face and did not argue.
He hit the siren, and we went after the coupe.
My phone rang at the first red light we ran.
It was Brice.
I put it on speaker with my thumb.
"You're behind me," he said. His voice was light and fast. "I can see your lights. Dad taught us both to drive in a parking lot, remember? You were always slower."
"Pull over, Brice."
"No."
"There are four cars on you. There'll be a helicopter in ten minutes. Pull over."
"I'm going to see her," he said.
"Who?"
"The road. I never went back." He laughed, and it broke in the middle. "Three years, Samson. I sold the car so I would never have to look at it. I took a car service to my own father's house on the other side of the county so I wouldn't pass the exit."
"Stop the car."
"She had a bag over her shoulder. Did you know? A canvas bag with a pin on it, a little yellow fish."
I did not breathe.
I knew that bag.
It had been in the evidence locker, and I had signed the form.
