Chapter 24: The Road Home
"I told them no," I said.
Samson did not move.
"I told the director thank you, and that I was sorry, and that I would not be coming back to Sydney."
"Victoria."
"I called a marine lab in Santa Barbara an hour later. They've wanted me for two years. I start in January."
He stared at me across the empty plate.
"You're staying."
"I'm staying."
"Because of me?"
"Because of my mother's house," I said. "And because of the sea, which is forty minutes from here and is exactly as wet. And a little because of you."
"A little."
"A medium amount."
He came around the table so fast the chair went over.
He lifted me out of mine and kissed me, and I tasted lemon and sugar and the end of three years.
"Say it again," he said against my mouth.
"I'm staying."
"Again."
"I'm staying, Detective, and you'll have to learn to eat dinner at a normal hour."
He laughed into my hair.
We stood in my mother's kitchen with the light going out of the window, and nobody was behind a closet door and nobody was lying.
He took my hand and walked me down the hall.
In my old bedroom he undressed me slowly, one button at a time, and this time neither of us joked about the stars.
I pulled him down onto the narrow bed and wrapped my legs around him.
"Look at me," I said.
He did.
He pushed into me with his eyes open, slow and deep, and I held on to his shoulders and said his name.
He moved in me slowly, with all the time in the world.
