Chapter 7: Closet Girl
By morning the video had two million views.
A guest at table three had filmed the whole thing, from the first whisper to Brice standing there holding a cake with a candle on it.
Someone had captioned it Closet Girl.
The firm put Brice on leave by noon, pending a review.
His statement said I was a grieving ex-girlfriend who had suffered a breakdown.
I read it aloud in my mother's kitchen, and Samson took the phone out of my hand and put it face down.
"He's scared," he said.
"He's good at looking calm."
"Calm men don't call it a breakdown."
Tierney had been fired before breakfast.
I knew because her mother called me, crying, and I let it ring out.
Samson did not go home that night.
He said he would sleep on the sofa, because Brice's father had told him to stay away from the family, and Samson had never done a thing he was told by that man.
I let him.
At eleven, there was a bang on the front door.
I was in the kitchen in my mother's old cardigan, rinsing a glass.
Samson was already in the hall with his hand on his holster.
"Stay back," he said.
"I live here."
"Stay back anyway."
Another bang, a heavy one, and then the glass panel beside the door exploded inward.
A crowbar swung through the gap.
I threw my arm up, and a shard opened the heel of my hand.
Samson hit the door with his shoulder and yanked it open.
Russell Tull was on the porch.
He was soaked in whiskey, with the crowbar in one fist, swaying, and his face was streaming.
