Chapter 15: What Pellegrini Offered

Santo's POV

Gianna's father sat down in my study without being asked.

He put a leather folder on my desk and laid his gold-ringed hand on top of it.

My consigliere stood at the window, and two of my capos stood by the door.

Moira was upstairs with the baby.

I had told her to stay there.

"You turned down the regency," he said. "The adviser told the table at noon."

"I did."

"That was foolish, and I've come to fix it."

He opened the folder and turned it to face me.

"Giacomo is finished. Six of my votes, and the seat is yours by Sunday night. Not a regent's seat. Yours, for good."

"And the price?"

"Three signatures."

He counted them off on his fingers.

"The first is a marriage contract. My daughter is free to marry the day Giacomo is gone, and the Family wants a Pellegrini next to the chair."

I looked at him.

"Your daughter chose Giacomo in front of the whole table."

"My daughter will do as she is told."

"And the second?"

"Rocco is raised in your house as your heir. The Ferraro blood stays at the table, and the Pellegrinis' grandson is not left in a gutter."

"And the third."

"The Corso girl's guardianship passes to a board of three. Myself, you, and one man of my choosing."

He smiled.

"The mother goes back to her own people in another state. She is young and she will marry again. The child stays here, where she can be taught what she is."

The room was very quiet.

My consigliere had stopped looking at the window.

I picked up the folder and held it in both hands.

"Let me see if I have this right," I said. "You want me to marry your daughter."
