Chapter 10: Nine Hands
Lena's POV
On Saturday morning I called an emergency session of the Fairbanks board, and nobody dared refuse.
Twelve people sat around the walnut table at ten o'clock.
I sat in my father's chair with a glass of water and my attorney at my elbow.
Beyond the glass wall behind me, a hundred employees stood on the floor outside, pretending to work.
The chairman had come in last, in a fresh gray suit.
He gave me a thin smile.
"Ms. Fairbanks. I'm pleased to see you've taken an interest."
"Sit down," I said.
He sat.
"I have one item," I said. "Three days ago you told this board that my father's estate was under review. You said the buyer's offer was a good one and the vote had to be Wednesday."
"It was my honest assessment."
"Mr. Sorrell."
Samson stood at the far end, with the same closed folder.
He had flown in at dawn on a company plane, and he had not slept.
He walked the length of the table and laid a single printed page in front of the chairman.
"This is an email from you to my grandmother's office, sent in September," Samson said. "I was copied on it by mistake. It names a consulting fee for you, two million dollars, payable if the vote passed."
The room did not move.
"The estate was never under review," Samson said. "You invented that to stop the heir from walking in before the vote."
"This is outrageous."
"It's a printout."
The woman by the window said, "Mr. Chairman, is that your signature?"
