Chapter 17: Javier Takes More
Javier had learned three things about Dante Greco in a month, and he turned them over every night like coins.
The first was that Dante never asked for anything.
The second was that he would do anything he was told.
The third, the one that kept Javier awake, was that he looked at every instruction as if it were a gift.
He had also learned a name.
Javier had read it over Dante's shoulder on the shower-room bench: Rodrick knows it was you.
Dante had said only, "My cousin," and that the next pier was off.
Since then a black car had sat outside the dormitory every night, and Dante checked the corridor before he opened the door.
Javier had not asked for more.
On Saturday night Daniel was on a teaching-ward shift until morning.
Dante sat on the edge of the bed with his bandaged forearm resting on his knee, and waited to be told what to do.
Javier locked the door.
"It's my night," he said.
"I know."
"What do you want?"
Dante blinked.
"Whatever you want."
"That isn't an answer." Javier took off his glasses and set them on the desk.
"Tell me what you'd do if I said anything. Not what I'd like. What you'd like."
A long pause.
Dante's throat moved.
"Everything," he said at last.
"That's worse. That's not even a sentence." Javier crossed to him and put two fingers under his chin. "All right. I'll choose, then. And you'll tell me when I'm wrong."
"You won't be wrong."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
He kissed him.
He took his time, one hand in Dante's hair, tasting him, and then he pushed him down on the bed with a hand on his chest.
Dante went down at once.
It was the thing Javier hadn't understood, in the first week.
Dante did not go down like a man giving way.
He went down like a man who had been waiting a very long time to be allowed to rest.
Javier undressed him.
He did it carefully around the bandage, peeling the shirt and the trousers away.
Dante lay bare on the narrow mattress, flushed to the collarbone.
