Chapter 22: Thomas at the Gate
Thomas Whitfield stood at the gate of the Rossi estate in a wrinkled shirt, with two days of beard and no watch.
Dante had never seen him without the watch.
He walked down the drive with Javier on one side and Maria's two men a polite distance behind.
Thomas looked at the men, and at the cane in Javier's hand, and at the strap across Javier's shoulder, and his face crumpled.
"I didn't know," he said. "I swear to God I didn't know about the car."
"Start at the beginning," Javier said.
"I leaked the fake exam. That was me. I'm not going to lie about it."
Thomas's voice shook.
"I was sick of being second to a scholarship kid, and my father said it would be a joke."
"I remember the joke."
"Last week I heard him on the phone in his study. He was talking to a driver."
Thomas swallowed.
"He said, the roommate, the gray car, the harbor road, nine o'clock. I thought it was about a shipment."
"I didn't understand until the whole campus heard what happened to you."
Javier did not move.
Dante, a step behind, kept his hands in his pockets.
Every muscle in his body had gone hard.
"Your father paid the driver," Javier said.
"Yes."
"For me."
"I think it was for the other one." Thomas glanced at Dante, quickly, and away.
"The money came from a man in a gray suit. I think he wanted Greco hurt, and you were walking in front of him."
It was very quiet at the gate.
A bird called somewhere in the pines.
Dante felt his own pulse in his teeth.
He said nothing at all.
"I'm sorry," Thomas said. "I know it doesn't mean anything."
"It doesn't." Javier's voice was perfectly even. "Here's what will mean something. Go to the police. Tell them everything you told me, in a statement, with your name on it."
