Chapter 28: The Chains

I pressed the first button, and the whole city screamed.

It was a storm siren's rising wail, forty of them at once, from the falls to the airport.

It rolled over the rooftops.

I had heard it a thousand times as a drill on the first Wednesday of every month.

Now it was the loudest thing in the world.

From my roof I watched the grays turn.

They had been walking east to the arena, and the sirens took them by the back of the neck.

Heads lifted. Bodies swung.

Thousands of them stopped in the streets and in the lots.

Then they turned and began to walk west.

Toward the sound.

Toward me.

It looked like wind going through a wheat field.

I stood at the rail with my hand on the cabinet and my heart pounding.

For a moment I thought: it worked.

"Bets," I said. "Report."

"Door one's open!" Bets shouted. "Door two, three, four. Tor's crew is through. They're cutting five."

"And the people?"

There was a pause on the line.

"They're not moving," Bets said.

I closed my eyes.

"What do you mean, not moving?"

"The doors are open and they won't walk," Bets said.
