The earbud under my braid went silent.
"Ramsey," I said.
Kyla smiled wider and walked back to her canvas chair.
I walked the other way, up the terrace steps, through Darlene's front hall, out the front door.
Dylan shouted after me from the arch.
"Jodes! The kiss! We haven't done the kiss!"
I didn't look back.
At the first rest stop on the Hutchinson I pulled over and opened the file on my phone.
Bank statements. Wires. Two years of them.
I scrolled to the last page.
The very first deposit Tusk & Trail ever received.
August, two years ago.
$200,000.00.
From: Gannett Hotels, Inc.
Memo: "For D. Make it count."
That August, Ramsey had been driving up every Sunday with a pitchfork in the truck bed.
"Jo." His voice came back in my ear, rough. "I'm here. I'm sorry. I was on the other line with my office."
"Is it real?"
"Yes."
I put my forehead on the steering wheel.
"I'll tell you all of it," he said. "To your face. Come home."
He was sitting on the farmhouse porch steps when I drove in.
