Chapter 10: Forty-First Floor

Ronan's POV

I had never been to the forty-first floor of Carrington Tower without a lawyer.

This time I came alone, with my coat open and no appointment.

The receptionist stood up too quickly.

"Mr. Keyes, he's in a meeting..."

"Then he'll leave it."

I walked through the glass doors at the end of the hall, past a row of assistants who looked at their screens, and opened the last door without knocking.

Landon Carrington sat behind a very large desk.

He was on the phone.

He looked up, saw me, and said into the receiver, "I'll call you back."

He set it down very gently.

"Ronan," he said. "I wasn't expecting the pleasure."

"Stay away from her."

He tilted his head.

"From whom?"

"You know who."

"My wife."

"Your ex-wife," I said. "As of last Thursday. You made her sign it yourself."

His face didn't change, but a muscle in his jaw did.

He was thirty-four years old and he ran the second-largest freight company on this coast, and I'd known him for six years.

I had never once seen him afraid.

He was afraid now.

It was in the careful way he laid his hands flat on the blotter.

"She's carrying my sons," he said.

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"You don't," I said. "Nobody does. You agreed to the test."

"I agreed to a show." He leaned back. "I know her, Keyes. I was married to her for three years. She counts the change in her pocket before she crosses a street. She doesn't sleep with strangers in hotel bars."
