Chapter 15: The Dress

I went to Larkwood on Thursday with Kerry, because I wasn't going to go alone.

The front door had a new lock.

I rang the bell like a stranger.

A housekeeper opened it, and her eyes went wide, and she stepped back without a word.

Marilyn was in the drawing room with tea.

Kendra sat on the sofa beside her, in my cardigan.

"Take it off," I said.

Kendra looked down, and went red, and didn't move.

"Jessa, dear," Marilyn said. "You can't just walk into a private home."

"It's my home. The prenuptial agreement you wrote says so."

"It says that if the other party is proved unfaithful."

"Landon was. There's a jeweler's receipt, and an earring."

"Then take it up with a judge." Marilyn put down her cup. "What do you want?"

"My gown. The seamstress says someone here signed for it."

"Oh, that," Marilyn said. "The green one."

"Yes."

"I haven't seen it."

"Your name is on the receipt."

"Then the staff have mislaid it." She smiled. "It would be a pity if you couldn't attend on Saturday."

"I'm attending."

"Of course. Table nineteen. By the kitchen doors, where the foundation seats the wives of men who have disappointed it."

Kerry made a small, ugly noise.

"I'm not on table nineteen," I said. "Landon put me in the front row."

"Landon's seating plan was changed this morning."

"By whom?"

"By the chair of the foundation," Marilyn said. "Which is me."

She picked up her tea again.

"You can have the green dress back," she said. "I'll even have it pressed. If you sit at nineteen, and say nothing to the press, and let me tell the room what the envelope says in my own words."

"Your own words."

"Landon's heirs, welcomed home," she said. "Think how lovely."
