Chapter 6: Terms

We argued the terms on the curb outside Kerry's building, in the cold, with the bakery's yeast smell drifting down.

Ronan wanted a lawyer and a courthouse.

I wanted a blood test and a locked envelope.

"There's a test that works at nine weeks," I said. "A needle in my arm and a swab from each of you. No risk to them."

"And the result?"

"Sealed at the lab. Nobody reads it but a doctor who doesn't know any of us."

"You don't want to know either?"

"I want to know when I'm ready to hear it," I said. "Not before."

He considered that.

Then he nodded, once.

"Fine. Then three rules."

"I'll make the rules."

"You'll make them," he agreed. "I'll make sure they're fair."

I held up one finger.

"Nobody claims anything until the envelope opens. You don't say they're yours. Landon doesn't say they're his."

"Done."

"Two. You don't talk about them to the press, or to the board, or to your lawyers."

"Done."

"Three." I stopped.

He waited.

"You don't touch me," I said. "Not until we know."

He looked at my mouth, and then at the curb, and back to my eyes.

"Why?"

"Because I can't think when you do," I said. "And I need to think."

The honesty in it surprised both of us.

His lips parted, and for a second I thought he might say something he shouldn't.

"Rule three," he said at last, rough, "will be the hardest."

"Then it's a good rule."

"I have a rider."

"Of course you do."

"If you faint, or bleed, or get a phone call you can't answer, you call me." His voice had no softness in it, only weight. "I don't need to touch you to carry something for you, Jessa."
