Chapter 13: The Walk-In

At two in the morning on Monday, the night chef of the Aldrich flagship texted me a photograph of a closed pantry door.

Under it he had typed, Miss Tennant, I know you don't work here. He's been in there since midnight.

I took a cab.

The kitchen was dark and echoing, all steel and cold light, and the walk-in freezer hummed against the far wall.

The pantry door stood half open.

Weston sat on the tile floor inside it with his back against a stack of flour sacks, his jacket off, his legs stretched out.

He had a bottle of water in one hand and he wasn't drinking it.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"He pulled the loan."

I leaned in the doorway.

"All of it?"

"A hundred and eighty million, due in sixty days. He said the market would find me a new lender by Christmas, and the market would charge me a lot more." He rolled his head against the sacks. "I said no to his face. I said I wouldn't marry his daughter and I wouldn't bring you to sign. He stood up and told me I'd end up selling the hotels in pieces."
