Chapter 18: Between Floors
The glass elevator hung between the ninth and tenth floors of the Aldrich flagship.
The whole sleeping city lay below us in rain-streaked gold.
I had stopped it with a brass key from my coat pocket at ten past midnight.
The lights dimmed to a soft amber glow.
Weston stood against the back wall in the same wet coat, with the bundle of cream envelopes still in his fist.
His eyes were red.
"I read them," he said. "Every one. Three years of Mondays."
"All of them?"
"I read them on the stairs. I read them in the car."
"I read them in the lobby, and the night porter asked if I was all right, and I said no."
"Weston."
"There's one that says, he likes his eggs soft and his mother likes hers hard, and he won't ask for the ones he likes, so make both."
I couldn't help it.
I laughed, and my eyes stung.
"Put those down," I said.
He set the envelopes on the floor in the corner with enormous care.
Then he straightened and looked at me.
"Take off your coat," I said.
He took it off.
"The jacket. The tie."
He undressed in front of the black window, piece by piece, and the city blazed through the glass behind him.
When he stood in his shirtsleeves I unwound the long silk scarf from my own neck.
It was plum, with a fringe, and I had worn it all day for this.
"Hands up," I said. "Hold the rail."
A brass rail ran round the glass at waist height.
He reached back and wrapped his fingers around it.
I stepped close, and passed the scarf around his wrists and the rail twice, and knotted it.
"If you pull," I said, "it gets tighter."
