Chapter 20: Suite 1204

Suite 1204 was dark except for the city.

The armchair stood where Blythe's coat had lain on the night everything ended.

I sat in it.

I had arrived first, with my own key card, and I had moved the chair so it faced the bed.

I wore the green dress and nothing else.

I had taken off my heels and left them by the door.

When the lock clicked at midnight, I didn't move.

Weston came in with his jacket over his arm and shut the door behind him.

He stopped.

He saw me in the chair.

The bed.

The window.

The sheet turned down.

He did not need to be told.

"Close the curtains halfway," I said. "Not all the way."

He did.

"Sit on the bed. Facing me."

He sat on the edge of the mattress in his black suit.

I looked at the man who had told me he was fond of me in this room three weeks ago.

His eyes were steady.

"This is the chair," I said. "This is where her coat was."

"I know."

"Say what you did."

His throat moved.

"I dropped my wife in this room," he said, slowly, "on our third anniversary, because I thought I loved someone else. I told her the marriage was a convenience. I offered her money." He swallowed. "I said the worst thing, which is that I was fond of her."
