Chapter 11: First Shipment
"The press," I said.
"Channel 7. The Star-Ledger. Some guy with a podcast," Carlo said on the phone. "He's got a banner, Mara. Corrigan Freight, Proud Partner of the Port. He had it printed Friday."
"Is Gianna coming?"
"She bought a hat."
"Good," I said. "Tell him I'll be there to sign off."
Tuesday was cold and bright.
The wind off Newark Bay smelled like salt and diesel.
Berth 12 was a long gray yard stacked with shipping containers in red and blue and rust.
Twenty brand new white Freightliners stood in a row along the fence.
CORRIGAN FREIGHT in green letters on every door.
Nate's nine old trucks were parked behind them.
The banner hung off the fence.
Proud Partner of the Port.
There was a folding table with a sheet cake on it.
Nate stood in front of the trucks in a new camel coat that looked a lot like Carlo's.
Gianna stood beside him in a big white hat, holding his arm.
A news van was parked by the gate.
A woman with a microphone was doing her makeup in the side mirror.
