Chapter 17: Attempts Two and Three

Cassian walked to the table and stood in front of the dean with his hands at his sides.

He had a sentence ready. It was the one he had said to his parents, and it had cost him a week of nights.

"Yes," he said. "I said sure to it."

Norman's head came up.

"Norman and Britteny asked me to make Noah fall for me so he'd write the letter," Cassian said. "I agreed. I didn't tell Noah. I told my parents on Monday, and I'm telling you now, with the first-years here."

"Why now?" asked the dean.

"Because Noah would have asked me why," Cassian said. "And I would've had an answer."

At the wall, the girl from the front row put her hand over her mouth.

The dean looked at Noah.

Noah looked back at her without a word and did not add anything to it.

"Mr. Haverstock," the dean said at last. "The Board is not in the habit of thanking a student for confessing to a plot we've just watched on a screen."

"No, ma'am."

"The earlier complaint against you is dismissed. You were in a parked car and the recording shows you nodding to a beekeeping tutorial." She paused. "Is that what it was?"

"One and a half speed."

"Then the Board accepts that." She took her glasses off. "You owe eight people an apology."

"I know."

He turned around and said it to each of them in turn, and it took a long time.

None of them said sure.

The last one, the girl in the front row, shook his hand and said, "You looked like you were going to be sick, and you did it anyway."

Noah was already gone by the time he got to the hall.
