Chapter 24: Adjourned
On graduation morning the dean read out three hundred names, and she saved the last two for herself.
"Noah Blaze," she said.
Noah crossed the stage in a rented gown with his canvas tote under it, because he would not leave the laminated schedule in a chair.
The label girl and the twins and the lemonade man yelled from row nine, and the lemonade man had brought a cart.
"Cassian Haverstock."
Cassian walked up, and the dean put the folder in his hands.
"Mr. Haverstock," she said, low. "Your answer to the Board was the best sentence I've heard in this hall."
"Which one?"
"The one about the squeaky cup."
He laughed so hard he almost dropped the diploma.
The wedding was two weeks later, in the Haverstock garden, and Cassian's mother ran it from a folding table with a gavel.
She had written an agenda.
Item one was the processional, and item two was the vows, and item three, in capitals, was NO SPEECH.
"Call to order," said Cassian's father, at the head of the aisle, in a suit and a cardigan he'd put on underneath it.
The retriever came down the aisle first with the ring box tied to his collar, and stopped to sit on the officiant's shoe.
The officiant was the dean.
She did not seem to mind the dog.
"Noah," she said, when it was time. "Do you take Cassian?"
"I do."
"Do you have a reason?"
The garden laughed.
"Yes," Noah said. He wasn't laughing, and his eyes were wet. "He said no to a check for my rent. He gave me his list. He carried the groceries to the cart. I counted. I've been counting for a month, and I'm out of numbers."
"Cassian," said the dean, with her mouth twitching. "Do you take Noah?"
Cassian opened his mouth, and the first word that came up was the old one, the easy one, and he felt it there.
