Chapter 9: Motion Carried

At breakfast on Saturday, Cassian had asked who called Noah at three in the morning.

"Wrong number," Noah had said, and turned his phone over again.

Cassian let it go, because he had a speech to write.

On Saturday night, he stood up at the dinner table and asked for the floor.

"Point of order," his father said. "The floor is a table."

"Then I'd like the table," Cassian said.

His mother wrote that down.

She sat at one end with her notebook, and his father sat at the other.

Noah sat on the long side with the retriever's chin on his shoe.

"I have two items," Cassian said. "Item one. I owe you the truth about the video."

Nobody said anything.

"There's a video from campus, filmed by Noah."

"I was in my car in headphones when my friends bullied a first-year," Cassian said. "The Board thinks I encouraged it."

His mother put down her pen.

"Did you?"

"No. But I was there, and I said sure to the dean when she asked if I did. I say sure to everything."

He looked straight at his father.

"That's mine to fix, and I'm fixing it," Cassian said.

"Noah filmed it," his father said slowly.

"Yes."

"And you're sitting next to him."

"I'm sitting next to him on purpose."

Noah, across the table, did not move, though the color came up his neck.

"Moved that we thank Noah for filming it," said Cassian's mother.

"Seconded," said his father. "And moved that Cassian apologizes to the first-year in person."

"Carried," Cassian said. "I'll do it Monday."
