Chapter 27: The Car at Nine
Rosaria's POV
I did not want the chair.
I sat in it because the oldest capo pulled it out for me, and because twelve men were standing, and it was quicker than arguing.
It was hard oak with a high back, and it was still warm from my husband.
Gaspare had stepped to the side wall.
He stood with his hands behind him and his eyes on the floor, a man with no say in the room.
"Bring them forward," I said.
The guards walked my father to the foot of the table.
He had slept in the cellar in his good grey suit, and the suit was creased and gritty.
My mother came after him on her own feet.
She had her handbag on her arm.
"Rosaria," my father said. "Cara. We were frightened. We only wanted to get your sister away from that animal."
"You wanted to get yourselves away."
"We were taking the truck to Naples to find a lawyer."
"With forty thousand euros under the seat, and two passports."
"For a lawyer."
"One of the passports has Mama's picture and a name I don't know."
My mother's mouth moved.
She said nothing.
"Mama," I said. "You went down to the cellar with a tray."
"Yes."
"You heard me name the north gate in the hall, with every capo listening. You heard what Papa did."
"Yes."
"And you took the key off the kitchen hook and let him out."
"He is my husband," she said.
Her voice was dry and steady.
"I am your daughter."
"You are the one who manages," my mother said. "You always did. You were different. You never needed anyone to hold your hand. Venera needed me, and your father needed me, and you didn't."
"I needed you the night they sold me."
"You were fine."
"I was thirty-four years old, and I stood in that study while you told me, in front of my husband, that I would manage."
"And you did manage! Look at you. You sit in that chair!"
