Chapter 15: Four Sugars
Cal's POV
I did not sleep.
I sat on the ring apron until the skylight went from black to gray, and I listened to the building.
She had taken her duffel bag and gone down the stairs without a word, and I had let her.
At five-thirty I put on my jacket and walked to Route 6.
The Lackawanna Motel had a diner across the road, open all night, with four booths and a counter.
Lou was at the counter.
He had a cup of coffee in front of him, and next to it a pile of torn sugar packets, and I counted four empty.
His phone lay face down by the saucer.
He kept one hand on it.
"I figured you'd come," he said, without turning.
I sat on the next stool.
"Vince left at three," Lou said. "He stayed after she went. He drank my coffee. He told me things, because I'm a man he owns, and he never thinks a man he owns will talk."
"What things?"
"What's in the bottles."
The waitress poured me a cup, and I did not touch it.
"It's a sedative," Lou said. "A powder that comes off a veterinary supplier, mixed in a back room. It goes in clear and it tastes sweet. About two rounds after you drink it your legs go and you can't tell your hands from the ropes."
"Sweet," I said.
"I know."
"I told my cornerman it tasted sweet. In Allentown."
"I know you did." Lou turned the cup in a circle on the saucer. "Vince said the Allentown card was the first time he tried it on a contender. You were the favorite, and he had money on the other kid. A bleed was an accident he hadn't planned on."
