Chapter 13: Where's the Rule Now

Darcy's POV

I was still at the kitchen table at one in the morning when the back door opened.

I had turned my phone face down an hour before.

The forty-one notifications had become two hundred, and I didn't want to know which of them had my name in it.

Keith came in with the cold on his jacket and stood just inside the door.

He looked at me, and I looked at the clock over the stove.

He took a business card out of his pocket and set it on the table.

It was the lawyer's card, the one Preston had told him I would want.

"Where were you?" I asked.

He opened his mouth and shut it again.

Two years of his rule sat in the room between us.

I heard myself laugh, short and ugly.

"You said I'd never ask where you are," I said. "I'm asking. Where's the rule now?"

Something moved in his face, and it wasn't anger.

"At Dade's," he said. "I waited until he closed."

"And?"

"He wants a DNA test on live television, and he wants to ask the twins who they'd like to go home with."

My hands went flat on the table.

"Or the quiet way," Keith said. "You and the kids move into his house in Bexley by the premiere."

"No."

"You haven't heard the rest."

"I heard enough from your face." I stood up. "I'm not going anywhere near that house, Keith. Not for him, not for a network, not for you if you asked me to."

"I'm not asking."
