Chapter 15: Pancakes and a Producer

At seven, Milo came down the stairs in dinosaur pajamas and announced that he had been awake for hours.

June followed, dragging her one red boot by the strap.

"Mama slept in Daddy's room," Milo said, climbing onto a chair.

I dropped the spatula.

Keith, at the stove, didn't turn around.

"She did," he said. "Mama's sleeping in there from now on."

"Forever?"

"Forever."

"Can I have the guest room for my dinosaurs?" June asked.

"You can have the guest room for your dinosaurs," Keith said gravely, "if you eat your pancake."

She took the pancake.

It was that easy, and I had to turn to the sink so they wouldn't see my face.

Keith came up behind me with the dishes.

He set them in the water, and under cover of the faucet, his hand slid onto my hip and stayed.

His mouth was beside my ear.

"I'm going to think about last night all day," he said, very low. "At the water department. In a meeting about pipe pressure."

"Keith."

"I'm going to think about your mouth on my neck, and the sound you made when I put my tongue on you."

My knees went soft against the cabinet.

"The twins are right there," I whispered.

"I know." His thumb moved on my hip bone. "Tonight, I'm going to do it slower."

He picked up a dish towel and went back to the table, perfectly calm.

I stood at the sink with my face hot and my hands in cold water.

Behind me, Milo said, "Why is Mama's face funny?"

"Soap," said Keith.

Connie took the twins at eight-thirty, because I had told her only one sentence on the phone, "I'm going to the television station," and she'd said, "Take your good coat."
