Chapter 23: Her Turn to Talk

The alley behind the Calloway Room was full by then.

People who had walked out in disgust were standing by their cars in the cold, because none of them wanted to be the first to leave.

A dozen phones were up, and some of them were already recording.

Beau didn't seem to see them.

He stood under the streetlight with his hands open at his sides, and August stopped a few feet behind me.

"Five years," Beau said again. "I used to lie awake waiting for you to yell at me. You never did."

"No."

"So say something now."

I put my bag down on the hood of my truck.

I had thought about this for a week, and I had written nothing down.

"You asked me what I thought of Porch Light the night you sang it," I said. "At the altar. Do you remember what I said?"

He swallowed. "You said it was beautiful."

"I said it was beautiful, and I meant it."

"Marlo..."

"You didn't ask me one more question. Not that night, not once in five years. You never asked if I wanted a different kitchen, or if I was tired, or what I thought about Tilly's tour."

He opened his mouth, and I raised a hand.

"I'm talking," I said. "You'll get your turn in about two minutes, and you can have it then."

Somebody behind me made a small, delighted sound.

"I paid for your first two albums with my father's money. I mixed every record you made for free, because I thought that was what a wife did."

My voice stayed level, and it frightened me a little, how level it was.

"I stayed quiet because I loved you, and because I thought listening was my job. You took the quiet for yes, and you spent it."
