Chapter 9: The Ultrasound
The plate shattered across the floorboards.
Duck and glaze and sorrel splattered the hem of the Tribune critic's trousers.
The whole dining room gasped at once.
"She's not the chef here!" Brittany screamed. "I'm the chef here! Me!"
The critic looked down at her ruined trousers.
Then she looked up at Brittany.
She didn't say anything.
She picked up her bag, laid two hundred-dollar bills on the table, and walked out.
Neil chased her to the door.
"Please, let me comp you. Let me get you a car."
The door swung shut in his face.
He turned around.
His eyes landed on me.
"Out," he said. His voice cracked. "Get out of my restaurant."
"Gladly," I said.
Ezra already had my coat.
We walked out past ninety people who wouldn't meet Neil's eyes.
Sunday morning the review ran.
Katie read it out loud in our half-built kitchen, standing on a milk crate.
"Ellsworth House Lost Its Chef. It Shows."
