Chapter 9: The Phone Bill

Levi picked a diner on the edge of town where nobody from Derek's circle would ever eat.

He was already in a back booth when I came in on Tuesday, sitting very straight, with a manila folder under his hand.

I had spent the night staring at the ceiling of Carrie's spare room, thinking about fourteen hundred and eighty dollars and a clinic I had never heard of.

I had one question for the day, and it wasn't about Taryn.

"You came," he said, and stood up.

"You asked."

"People ask all the time and don't mean it."

He waited until I sat before he sat down again.

A waitress with a pencil behind her ear asked what we wanted.

"Coffee," he said, and looked at me. "Do you want coffee?"

"Tea," I said. "Plain toast."

"Plain toast and tea," he told her, and she wrote it down.

I hadn't said anything about feeling sick.

He just looked at my face and ordered the thing that wouldn't make it worse.

"Before you open that," I said, "I need to ask you something."

"Okay."

"Why are you helping me?"

"Because you didn't scream at me on your porch." He turned his cup a quarter turn on its saucer. "Most people would have. I was standing at your door asking about your husband's girlfriend."

"Is she?"

"I think so. I didn't know until Friday." He took a breath. "I'd been telling myself for a year that they were just old friends."

"I told myself the same thing for five."

"Then we're two of a kind."

The toast came, and I ate a corner of it, slowly.

Levi pushed the folder across the table.

"There are three parts," he said. "The first is what I gave you at the house, the phone logs. The second is her texts."
