Chapter 9: The Offer in the Training Room

Nolan's POV

The training room is the one place in the arena I have ever liked.

It has the whirlpool and the tape table and thirty years of smell, and at nine at night it is quiet.

I was wrapping a goalie's wrists for tomorrow when the door opened without a knock.

Lars came in wearing his suit jacket over a practice shirt. He shut the door and leaned on it.

"Brumley."

"Captain."

"You gave my wife a ride this morning."

I kept winding tape. "I gave her a ride to a clinic. She asked."

"Her friend asked. The bartender." He crossed the room and sat on the end of the tape table, which he knew I hated. "I've been thinking about your future."

"Mine?"

"The medical director job is open next season. The board would take my word on who fills it."

He said it as if he were offering me a coffee.

"It's an extra eighty thousand. A three-year deal. A title that gets you out of the locker room and into a nice office with a window."

I put down the tape.

"What do I do for it?"

"Nothing. You keep doing what you've done for three years."

"Which is."

"Keep that file shut."

He smiled. He had the face that sold trucks and sold tickets.

"Joss is confused, Nolan. She's been through a lot of needles."

He shrugged.

"She'd get hurt more if she kept digging, and you know it."

I looked at the man.

Eleven years I had known him. I had taped his ribs.
