Chapter 12: Hello, Kendra

Brooke's POV

Colby's truck came down the street at noon with Brent's pickup behind it.

Gabe and I were sitting on his porch steps, with a thermos between us and the half-built boat in the drive.

We had been sitting there for an hour, and we had not touched.

"They're early," Gabe said.

"Kendra called them," I said. "She wants the fight on her side of the street."

"Then she'll have it on mine."

He didn't stand up. He set the thermos down very gently.

Neighbors had come out onto their porches. A woman with a stroller stopped at the corner and a man across the road was filming with a phone.

Colby got out of the truck with his own phone raised and the little red light on.

Tori came up the walk beside him with the ring light clipped to her sleeve. Brent stayed a step behind, big and flushed.

"Everybody, look at this," Colby said to the camera. "My ex-fiancée's new friend. The man who's been terrifying a vulnerable woman in this house for weeks."

Behind them Kendra crossed my lawn.

She wore the cream sweater and no makeup. She walked slowly and kept her eyes on the ground.

The counter in the corner of Colby's screen said six thousand people were watching.
