I sent the officer Kendra's photograph by seven the next morning, with the time stamp circled in red.
He wrote back one line: "A picture from the sidewalk is a picture from the sidewalk. Keep every one."
So I kept it, and I posted clue two on Thursday at noon from my desk at school.
Look for the room with the best light.
I posted clue three on Friday after dinner, on Gabe's couch.
Count the steps from the street.
By ten that night, there were six thousand comments.
Most of them were strangers guessing. A diner in Olympia. The Tacoma Narrows bridge. Someone's grandmother's house.
Gabe sat beside me with the laptop on his knees, reading them aloud in a flat voice.
"Eight hundred people think it's a lighthouse."
"It isn't a lighthouse."
"One thinks it's a lighthouse and a bedroom."
"That one is close," I said.
He scrolled. Then he stopped.
An account with no photo and four followers had posted a dozen replies in an hour, always under Colby's.
The name was a string of letters. The writing was warm and lovely and sure.
Colby, it's obviously the harbor. First date, best light, the restaurant with the glass wall facing south. Brooke is sentimental, she always was. You should all go together. Bring Brent. Bring Tori. Don't bring anyone else.
"Don't bring anyone else," Gabe read.
"That's Kendra."
"She's decoded it."
"She decoded it Wednesday." I took a breath. "She knows exactly where this is. She's sending them to the wrong place on purpose."
