Chapter 4: The Lawyer

I told Ross Ellery the truth at the school gate.

"No," I said. "I didn't move out. I was in my kitchen yesterday morning, making my daughter's breakfast."

He nodded once.

"Then your husband lied to my company," he said. "I'd like that on paper somewhere. I'll be in touch."

He got into the black sedan and left.

I stood on the lawn with my pulse in my ears and decided I could fall apart after I had a lawyer.

The lawyer's office was above a bakery on Main Street.

Jill had found her in four phone calls and had paid the six hundred dollars deposit with her own card, over my objections, before I even sat down.

The lawyer was a woman in her fifties with reading glasses on a chain and a legal pad already covered in neat handwriting.

She didn't offer me a tissue.

She offered me a pen.

"Start with the house," she said.

I told her about the house.

My mother had died four years ago, and the life insurance paid sixty-two thousand dollars.

Derek and I used all of it as the down payment on the little colonial on Beech Street.

I had wired it myself from my old bank, because Derek said his account had a daily limit.

"And the deed?"

"I never looked at it," I said. "He handled the paperwork."

She slid her phone across the desk.

The county record showed one name on the house.

Derek Kane.

I felt my face go hot, and then cold.

"It's common," she said, not unkindly. "It's also his only argument. The money came from you. Your bank will have the wire records, with your name on the sender line and the title company's name on the other. That's not an opinion. That's a number with a date."
