Chapter 14: Hold the Contractor

The pilot stood at the end of the glass table and did not look at Corinna.

"Ma'am," he said to the lead investor. "I'm the company pilot. I've flown this group for nine years."

"I know who you are," she said. "Sit down."

"I'd rather stand."

Fraser set his phone in the middle of the table, face up, with a small speaker clipped to it.

"This is a call from two fifteen on the night of the storm," he said. "The pilot recorded it on his own phone. He sent it to me the same hour."

"Why you?" one of the men asked.

"Because I run the radio net, and I log what comes over it. I keep the log."

Corinna closed her folder.

"That's a private phone call," she said. "Playing it is a breach."

"Play it," said the lead investor.

Fraser touched the screen.

There was the hiss of wind first, and then Corinna's voice, quick and warm and perfectly clear.

"Hold the contractor. Mr. Ostby has changed the plan. Mrs. Ostby stays where she is, and please don't tell her the aircraft has been held. She'll only worry."

The pilot's voice, tired: "Understood, Ms. Frost."

"Thank you. You're a lifesaver."

The recording ended.

Nobody at the table spoke.

Corinna looked down the long glass at the three investors, and I watched her choose her face.

She chose hurt.

"That has been cut," she said. "Anyone can cut audio. That is my voice from a hundred voicemails, and I never said it that way."

"I've heard your voice on the radio for three years, Ms. Frost," the pilot said. "I'd know it in my sleep."

"You'd say anything. You're afraid for your job."
