Chapter 7: The Mascot's Rate
The owner of the Stampede lived in a house with a gate, and the gate opened before Lyle had finished stopping.
"They knew we were coming," Lyle said.
"I told them we were."
"That's a bad habit," he said. "Don't tell people things."
He parked under a tree and took out a paperback.
"I'll be here," he said. "If you're not out in thirty minutes I'm calling the sheriff and then my cousin who's a deputy."
I carried Gus in the sling and walked up the steps alone.
Franklin McClintock met me at the study door in a navy blazer with the team pin on the lapel.
He was sixty-three and had white hair, and he shook my hand with both of his.
"Mrs. Holloway," he said. "Congratulations on the boy."
"Janie," I said. "Hendry."
"Janie. Sit. Please."
His study smelled like leather and cigar and old money, and there was a folder on his desk with a rubber band around it.
He sat across from me and did not look at the baby.
Nobody who worked for Chase had ever looked at my son.
"I'll be direct," he said. "That was a hell of a performance on Monday."
"I read what was written."
"You did. And I respect it." He rolled the rubber band off the folder. "But I own a franchise, and I own a daughter, and I protect both. So let me tell you what I'm offering."
He slid a page across the desk.
"A house in Papillion. Paid in full, in your name. A trust for the boy through college. And a statement, which you'll sign, that the marriage was a private matter that ended amicably."
"And the baby?"
"The baby is yours," he said. "Chase will not contest that, and he'll say nothing further."
"Chase will say nothing about the father."
"Nothing."
"And I say nothing about the engagement."
"You say nothing about anything," he said. "In exchange for everything."
